NYPD detective Seraphia Newsom will avenge her brother’s death at any cost. Even if it means insinuating herself into a rough, Brooklyn street gang and going so far undercover, she’s not sure she’ll be able to get out. Every minute she spends in their midst means the clock ticking down on her life, especially when she overhears something that could get her killed.
Bowen Driscol is the heir to a crime enterprise. He never asked for the job, but with his father behind bars, he has no choice but to step in and keep the operation running. But when the NYPD blackmails him with a piece of damning information in exchange for aiding an undercover cop, he finds himself on the other side of the law for the first time in his life.
Bowen knows the danger Sera is in, and keeping her safe trumps saving his own ass. The problem? She can’t know he’s on her side. And there's the matter of the seriously inconvenient heat sparking between them that's incinerating his resistance. But Sera only sees Bowen's past, and men like him are the reason her brother is dead. If they're to get out alive, he'll have to risk exposing the man beneath, and hope to hell he doesn't blow the whole operation in the process.
I liked this book. I enjoy Tessa’s writing so I was pretty excited to read it. Once I started I could not stop, for the pacing was great. There were a few things that prevented me from loving it though, but I would still recommend to lovers of smoking hot contemporary romances.
I needed a bit more background on Sera. I liked her character, she was sassy, kick ass, and sweetness rolled in one enticing package. She was driven in pursuing her brother’s killer. And I loved that though she was surrounded by criminals, she did not lose her cool and became a wilting flower that needed rescuing. She was tough when she needed to be. I was surprised by her instant attraction to Bowen. Not that I didn’t love the tension and the buildup … but I supposed I expected more caution from an undercover cop. I loved loved her interactions with Bowen, and I enjoyed watching her lose herself to him. In fact, I found it to be great.
Bowen Bowen Bowen. I don’t know …. While I enjoyed him, I just did not buy into his obsession/possessiveness with Sera. He was like crazy over her within like 2 days. Going all out with his need to protect her from all harm. Now I liked that. Showed his honorable side, the good guy side that was willing to protect an innocent at the cost to himself. But his tortured soul was something that kind of pissed me off. It really did. LOL. He hated being the head of the criminal gang he inherited through his father. I simple could not understand why if he hated it so much … he was still there. WTF. He hated beating on people, hated breaking bones and inspiring terror. So errrm why the fuck do you keep doing it? I then started to think probably he couldn’t leave the life you know? Like they would whack his ass the minute he tried. But then in the end … it was not a big deal for him to leave at all. Probably I missed something. He was a complex character that I wanted to understand more. I needed to understand his motivations, this darkness that pulls at him sometimes to fall absolutely in love with him. I still liked him though.
Now onto our sex scenes.
I loved every single one. Every filthy dirty talking words out of Bowen’s mouth to Sera I loved. LOL. Tessa did not disappoint me there. Sera and Bowen’s chemistry was beautifully drawn, and I was immersed every time they came together. They sizzled, and it felt real. I liked that.
They fell in love pretty quickly. Hmm it could work. I mean my heart was jerking when Bowen told Sera how much he ‘fucking loved her’ … so I supposed it did work … even if he declared himself after like a week.
Overall I enjoyed this book, and thought it was a good addition from Tessa. I will be looking out for Connor’s book and the other band of misfits that were hinted at.
