Jack Delvaux is alive

Summer Redding thought the blindingly handsome jock who'd loved and left her years ago had died in the Washington Massacre. She grieved for her lost golden boy as the rest of the country mourned their dead—until she comes home to find a very alive Jack Delvaux waiting for her with a devastating secret that turns her life upside down.

No longer the carefree man he was in his youth, this Jack is dark, hard and dangerous; a fifteen-year veteran of the CIA hungry for answers…and hungry for her. The rich, good-looking charmer who broke her heart once before would have been easy to resist, but this man, this powerful man? Summer needs him, and he knows it.

When Jack's mission uncovers evidence of government involvement in the Massacre—and plans for another attack—he's primed for revenge. But he has more than vengeance to live for now, and when Summer's life is threatened, it's nearly Jack's undoing. Someone taking shots at his woman? That's a dead man walking.

Review

Midnight Fire is my first romantic suspense. I’ve been meaning to delve into the genre for a long time, but when your TBR list is mile-high, well, it’s easy to stick with what you know and love. I can’t say that I regret veering off my path, though. Midnight Fire was a great read.

So here’s the scoop: Summer Redding is a savvy political blogger with a huge following. She seeks and speaks the truth, no matter who it may expose, and you know there’s never a shortage of political misdeeds. She comes from a hard background—druggie, traveling parents who were more interested in getting and staying high than their daughter—but didn’t let that stop her from going to college and becoming an amazing woman. She’s strong, smart, and had her heart broken years ago by Jack Delvaux, a family friend of her aunt’s. She believes Jack is dead, a victim of a massacre that took out his entire family, with the exception of his sister.

But Jack Delvaux survived and has been in hiding since the massacre, determined to destroy the vermin that killed his family…and one man involved is a shirttail relative of Summer’s, who just died. And guess who were both at the funeral? :) When Jack realizes Summer has seen him, he knows he has to do something about it before she blogs it to the world and blows his cover, and that’s the beginning to the end of Summer’s present world.

Summer’s hanging onto a lot of past hurt. Jack was the only man who ever made her feel alive, and being the manwhore college dude he was at the time, he took her V-card and dumped her a week later without apology. Can’t blame the girl for being cautious when Jack shows up in her apartment. The tension between the two was awesome as they’re trying to both survive and solve a political scheme that’s aimed at taking down the country, while figuring out their own feelings for each other. There’s a lot of technical stuff going on, and sometimes that slowed the pace, especially at the beginning, but without it, the reader probably would’ve been lost. Both characters were awesome, great together both in the bedroom and as puzzle-solving equals. Jack’s a badass with a tender heart, and all the supporting characters are fabulous and definitely make me want to read the rest of the Men of Midnight Books. My TBR list just got longer…

About C.J. Burright

Hey, I'm C.J. and I write stuff. Mostly fantasy and paranormal romance with a sprinkling of urban fantasy. Supernatural's my thing (the TV show too) and if you wanna go all Medieval I'm totally there, especially if there's a weapon involved. But I like guns too. I'm okay with violence, especially if it's deserved. And I'll choose the anti-hero every time.

  1. Sounds like a good book but the guy on the cover looks way to young to be a 15-year veteran of the CIA (in my opinion anyway). I’m going to put this one on my TBR list.

Thanks for sharing something “the rest of us” can enjoy. (Tee hee)

  2. Ah, well maybe he’s one of those guys who ages better than the rest of us. :) He does look pretty good, especially considering the stress he’s gone through over the years. I know you’re proud of me for expanding my genre horizons, just so I can share them with you. Have a great week!
