Patience is a virtue…a lesson Stephen Dorsett has learned over the years, wooing his mate. He loves the prickly woman with all his heart, but he’s keeping a secret from her—one that will soon change the entire dynamic of their relationship.

Kate Matthews has a secret of her own, but she’s reluctant to share her surprise with Stephen. With her mate spending too many long hours and late nights at work recently, Kate begins to second-guess Stephen’s commitment to her.

One simple misunderstanding, fueled by insecurities and doubts, is all it takes to throw Kate and Stephen off course. Will they allow their secrets to pull them apart, or make their love stronger?

I’m psyched to be a part of the blog tour for Winter Secrets, another Black Hills Wolves story. I’ve got an excerpt for you and my review too–don’t forget to enter the $25 Amazon gift card giveaway at the end!

Excerpt

Kate Matthews gaped at the small, plastic stick she clutched with a death grip. The frantic drum of her heart beat against her ribcage while her stomach churned in discord. A swift influx of panic, elation, disbelief, and fear bombarded her all at once, dragging the air from her lungs in a noisy whoosh.

Pregnant.

“Oh, shit.”

Reeling from the revelation, she stumbled backward to drop onto the toilet lid before her weak knees buckled. Unfortunately, she miscalculated the distance and fell in between the sink and toilet with a surprised squeal, landing in a squished heap and banging her head on the wall in the process. Temporarily rendered stupid, she simply sat there, wedged in the tiny space, gawking at the little strip of plastic glaring the truth at her.

“You all right in there?” her mate, Stephen, called from the other side of the door. No doubt he’d scented her distress.

Alarm whipped through her bloodstream, and the pregnancy test flew from Kate’s trembling hand to clatter on the floor in front of her. When he twisted the doorknob, she bolted from the floor and snatched the small stick from the bathroom tiles.

“I’m fine,” she exclaimed. “There was a spider.”

He twisted the knob again, and she sent up a quick prayer of thanks she’d had the foresight to turn the latch.

“Why’d you lock the door?” A mix of irritation and concern tinged his deep voice.

Frantic, she stashed the plastic strip in a box of tampons in the cabinet under the sink, certain he’d never look there, and then darted for the entrance. Once she fumbled with the lock, she tugged the door open and came face to chest with Stephen.

“I must’ve locked it by accident when I came in.” The excuse sounded weak to her own ears. Surely, he would think the same. They never locked the bathroom door, if she could get him to close the damn thing at all.

A frown creased his golden features. He watched her through narrowed blue eyes—attempting to decipher the obvious lie and cow her with his probing stare at the same time.

Drop it. Drop it. Please, for the love of God, drop it.

It’s not common to find stories that focus on couples after they get together, as if falling in love is the end of the conflict, fun, and romance. So I was excited that the couple in Winter Secrets had already taken that journey and were in the great relationship beyond. :) Of course, things aren’t all rainbow-farting unicorns after the initial HEA, and such is the case with our couple in Winter Secrets. Both Stephen and Kate, recently mated wolf shifters, have secrets. Not earth-shattering in themselves, but sometimes relationships don’t take a whole lot to go sour, especially when one mate is insecure.

I liked both Kate and Stephen a lot. Kate has some shifter issues she hasn’t dealt with, but Stephen hasn’t pushed her, and all it takes is a wee misunderstanding to send their relationship into a tailspin. Usually, I’m not big on a story revolving around a misunderstanding that could be cleared up with a calm conversation, but it worked in Winter Secrets. I got Kate’s insecurities and why she jumped to the conclusion she did. Stephen could have been less of a jerk at the beginning, yet his response was real. We all snap at even the ones we love if pushed at certain times. So, there’s a rocky start and a fun, sexy, sweet road to reconciliation.

For me, however, a secondary character was even more interesting than the main characters. It could be because I’m naturally drawn to snarly, antisocial heros. :) Wes is a friend and co-worker of Stephen’s, and I just loved him! We catch just a glimpse of who he is and who he realizes his mate is, and I sooooooo want to read his story!

About C.J. Burright

Hey, I'm C.J. and I write stuff. Mostly fantasy and paranormal romance with a sprinkling of urban fantasy. Supernatural's my thing (the TV show too) and if you wanna go all Medieval I'm totally there, especially if there's a weapon involved. But I like guns too. I'm okay with violence, especially if it's deserved. And I'll choose the anti-hero every time.

  1. Hehe we’re both so into those growly anti-social ones. They really are fun.

I’ve found I’m really liking the second glimpse at a romance after they’ve found their HEA. It’s interesting seeing that dynamic and them fighting to keep what’s important to them. I’m totally gonna have to read this one :)

Thanks so much for joining in on the tour!

    • Oh yeah, love the snarly hero! I love to see the chemistry between characters who’ve already found each other, that the journey doesn’t end with true love. The adventure doesn’t end, right?
